The Lost Arts Weekend

Oh yes, it's all happening this last weekend of the Winter in Banyule Festival - two days filled with delightful nostalgic treats for everyone.
Fairy Sharka Story Time is on tomorrow where both big and little people are invited on a magical fairy journey.  Remember to dress up in your favourite costume for the 'Best Costume' competition to be held at the end of the session.  Fairy Sharka is on Sunday 28 August at 1 pm at the Watsonia Library, Ibbotson St, Watsonia.  Entry is free.  Contact 9435 2397.
Capping off the weekend is a spectacular Last Night of the Proms concert featuring the scintillating sounds of the Legends of Brass and the Australian Children's Choir.  This glorious musical afternoon is a unique opportunity to hear fabulous brass music in the beautiful deco surrounds of The Centre Ivanhoe.
Last Night of the Proms will be held on Sunday 28 August at 2 pm at The Centre Ivanhoe, 275 Upper Heidelberg Rd, Ivanhoe.  Cost is $20.  Contact Robert rcooper3095@bigpond.com or 9439 6637.  Enjoy!

And my cat said Fiddle Eye Fee

Are you a cat lover?  Part of the Arden Crescent Concert Series 2011, Sally-Anne Russell -  together with David McNicol on piano - will present a delightful program of songs all about cats on Sunday afternoon.  Sally-Anne is a principal mezzo soprano with Opera Australia.  Tickets will be available at the door but seats can be reserved by phoning the numbers below.  Afternoon tea is included in the admission price.

The Lost Art of Joke Telling

Calling out all budding comedians! Know a great joke?  Then here's your moment - kids and adults are invited to tell their favourite joke in an open mic environment this Saturday from 1 pm.  Jokes must be funny, non-discriminatory and kid-friendly.  Remember - no guts, no glory!  If you can't make it on the day then post your joke right here on our blog - http://winterinbanyule.blogspot.com

Curators Talk: Encounters and Collectors

Got a collection? Love hearing stories about people's collections?  Then join Curator Lella Caridi straight after the Collected Works Launch this Saturday as part of The Lost Arts Weekend.  Lella will talk about the stories and process behind the Encounters and Collectors Exhibition and you can hear for yourself how the lost art of collecting is still going strong in houses all over Banyule.

Collected Works Launch at The Lost Arts Weekend

Next weekend is also The Lost Arts Weekend - two days filled with delightful nostalgic treats including The Wednesday Afternoon Writers' Group Collected Works Launch and Diamond Valley Brass Band Concert.

Local residents and professional writers have worked together to publish an original anthology.  You can join us for morning tea and a sensory journey to launch their book and celebrate their stories while immersing yourself in the wonder of the Encounters and Collectors Exhibition and listening to the Diamond Valley Brass Band at the same time!
The Collected Works Launch will be held on Saturday 27 August at 11 am at the Banyule Arts Space, 14 Ivanhoe Parade, Ivanhoe.  Entry is free.  Contact enquiries@banyule.vic.gov.au or 9490 4222.

Chakra Belly Dance Workshop

What a gorgeous week it's going to be - hope you're getting out and about and enjoying the Winter in Banyule Festival!
There's lots on this coming weekend - the final weekend of the festival.  If you're feeling adventurous and want to try something new - then the Chakra Belly Dance Workshop run by Barbara Batticiotto and Zabelle will be right up your alley.

This workshop introduces the essence of belly dance and an awakening of the 'Chakra' energy - chakras are the the seven main energy centres of the body representing different colours and places of the body.  Designed to encourage physical connection by exercising flexibility and improving posture, the workshop will end with an open forum by the two teachers.

The Chakra Belly Dance Workshop is being held on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 August from 4 - 5.30 pm at the Health & Wellbeing Centre, 73 Devonshire Road, Watsonia.  Adults $15, Concession/Child $10.  Contact: 9432 6668.

Sing Sing Sing!

Sing your heart out tomorrow night at the Winter in Banyule Community Singing Night - a free event at the Livingstone Centre.

This fun night for everyone gives you the chance to sing your heart out at this group singing event hosted by the Livingstone Community Singers and led by Jane Coker.  Open to croakers, shower crooners and anyone who has ever dreamed of singing.

The Community Singing Event will start at 7.30pm on Monday 23 August at the Livingstone Centre,1 Livingstone Street, Ivanhoe.  Contact community@livingstone.org.au or 9497 2014.

Can you feel it?

Bulleen Art and Garden
Spring is in the air and it's a great time to be out and about.  Besides all the exciting events on today featured in yesterday's post, there are a couple of other events on tomorrow which will cap off a great Winter in Banyule weekend.

Art ideas for the garden
If you're looking for some garden inspiration - Bulleen Art and Garden has a free workshop on tomorrow where you can take a virtual tour of sculpture and other art in garden settings in Melbourne, Tasmania, Denmark and Italy.  This slideshow presentation will be presented by Meredith Plain, director Bolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art and Garden and ceramic sculptor and gardener.
Sarab of the Desert Rose
For something more exotic, Saba's Lebanese Restaurant in Ivanhoe is holding Sarab of the Desert Rose - a Middle Eastern dinner and belly dancing show complete with open fire, live drums and music.  Adults $45, Concession $40, Children $27 - contact 9499 1400 to book.

Roll up, roll up!

Wow - lots of things happening tomorrow at the Festival.  For those who love a good market - both the Ivanhoe Makers Market is on tomorrow at the Livingstone Centre in Ivanhoe and the inaugural travelling Magnolia Square pop up event is also being held on Saturday (and Sunday) at The Centre Ivanhoe.  Lots of gorgeous hand made goodies for all to be had!
Banyule's Big Sing
For culture vultures, the Heidelberg Theatre Company Capers is on tomorrow night at the Heidelberg Theatre in Rosanna in their annual fun theatrical event featuring HTC's on and off stage personalities doing all sorts of likely and less likely things to music (or not).  Banyule's Big Sing where Banyule's local choirs come together is on tomorrow afternoon with a workshop, afternoon tea and performance at the Banyule Community Health Centre in West Heidelberg.
Greensborough Winter Festival
And not forgetting young and old and everyone in between - the Greensborough Winter Festival is on tomorrow morning where Greensborough's streets will come alive with colour, music, fun and prizes to be won.  Paint your own masterpiece canvas or flower pot to take home and enjoy some live music.

Younger and older people will enjoy the vibrant Creative Ageing forum held at 11 am tomorrow at the Banyule Arts Space.  Getting older doesn't mean letting go of creativity, passion or direction - hear panellists discuss creative ageing and what it means for you and our broader community.
UNDERAGE Dance Party
Finally, the UNDERAGE Dance Party is on tomorrow night from 6 pm - 10.30 pm for 14-17 year olds only.  Two rooms of DJs will be playing cool tunes all night long at this fully supervised drug, alcohol and smoke free event.

Close Encounters

Margaret - Encounters & Collectors Exhibition
Welcome to Winter in Banyule!  Our Encounters and Collectors Exhibition and Festival Opening Event is being held this morning from 11 am - 12 pm at the Banyule Arts Space, 14 Ivanhoe Parade in Banyule.  You'll get a first look at this community arts project showcasing the fascinating stories and collections of amazing local residents.  The project includes a photographic exhibition, a social history publication and an installation of the collections.  Come and join us for a special morning of memories, stories and music.
Visual Feast Creations: Landscape or Landfill
There are two other exhibitions and a public art installation which are also part of the Festival - Claydescope has already opened at Bulleen Art and Garden while watch out for the telegraph poles along Burgundy Street in Heidelberg!  Inspired by the traditional art form of landscape painting, a series of recycled artworks created out of materials designated for landfill can be seen on the telegraph poles as part of the 'Landscape or Landfill' public art installation.  Each piece has been cut and shaped to represent various areas of Sills Bend in the Warringal parklands.

Photographic project and exhibition Banyule 100 celebrates all that is wonderful about our young people and community.  The project highlights young people in our area who are doing cool things and will be shown at Watsonia Library, Ibbotson St, Watsonia.

Claydescope; an Exhibition of Ceramics

And aren't they beautiful?  The Claydescope exhibition at Bulleen Art & Garden starts today and runs until 17 September at the Bolin Bolin Gallery.  The exhibition showcases works by members of The Claydreamers Pottery Studio who work in a variety of ceramic disciplines from garden sculpture to functional pottery.
